"I recently acquired a Penta AQ131D engine that was in need of serious fine tuning. I replaced the belt that was wrong size, cap that was on backwards, and cleaned the timing gears that had built up sludge on all teeth. I have a Clymer book but it is vague on setting the belt timing. I could use some help here as winter is coming to Maine shortly. New wired, cap, plugs, belt so far. I also broke the sea water filter part that is going to cost me another 90 bucks new if anyone has one out there?"

The Seloc Manual has much more detail--photos and all--for changing a timing belt. I'd recommend getting a copy.

A great step-by-step article explaining how to change a timing belt on a B21 motor (2.1 liter). Except for the heat exchanger, reservoir tank and raw water pump it's basically the same thing. The alignment marks, distributor/rotor position, #1 cylinder @ TDC are the same on marine or car engines.."
