"Engine starts and idles fine, if you give it throttle it starves for fuel. I checked all fuel lines and installed an inline filter. this all being done after the problems started and I found there was no fuel filter anywhere. I am not familiar with the carb. on this engine, could it be a problem with the plunger piece on the side of the carb? Will a carb rebuild kit ppossibly help? I have not opened it up, but figure there is a spring and some type of diaphram in there. any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks"

"A carb rebuild is a good idea, and it can be your accelerator pump, as well as many other things. What type of fuel filter did you install? You should have installed a canister type that also seperates water from the fuel. Those small inline filters are for outboards.

Without the engine running, remove the spark arrestor and have someone apply full throttle. You should see a good spray of fuel as the throttle is applied. If you don't, then the accelerator pump is the problem. Also check the clear line that runs from the fuel pump to the carb, there should not be any fuel in it, if there is, then the pump is leaking and needs to be replaced.

Good luck and have a great day,

Rob."

If the boat has been stored fo

If the boat has been stored for a while the gas in the carb may have tunred to varnish in the float bowl and cloged the tube going from the accelerator pump to the throat of the carb. Sometimes you don't even need to rebuild the carb just keep working the accelerator pump and the new gas in the float bowl will disolve the varnish and it will start working.

"When rebuilding the pump, it will also be necessary to remove, inspect and clean the screen and check valve located in the bottom of the carb. Fuel to the pump must pass through it and they do give trouble with old gasoline. To do this the carburetor must first be removed. Purchase a complete carburetor kit as this will have new gaskets and other parts which may need replacement."
