"Need some thoughts from anyon

"Need some thoughts from anyone on what’s the best way to go about fixing my boat.
First I got this boat with the hope that it was going to be basic maintenance and of course it isn’t. I tune it up replaced the wires coil and after getting the firing order right took it out for a fun day on the water. Today I was checking the timing when I heard a loud lifter noise followed by a pop and then the motor died. I got it started back up and can hear a rattle noise in the valve cover, when you open the cap on the valve cover you can see the first lifter is not moving and the push rod is rattle around.

What I want to know is.
I have a 1976 AQ 130 C motor and a 280 stern drive should I just rebuild it or would it be cheaper to find a newer motor/ block and just replace?
What other motor will fit without doing major changes?
Also can I get a motor from a car and just swap things over?

Thanks in advance to any one who can help ."

"About 8 years ago my Dad gave me our family boat, which he bought new in 1972. The boat itself was in great shape but the engine (AQ 130C) needed either rebuilding or replacement. I lived in South Lake Tahoe, CA at the time. I had a heck of a time even finding anyone within 50 miles of there that would even talk to me about it. I finally found a local V/P dealer who suggested I replace the engine with a V/P factory rebuilt engine that he would sell me, so I went with that option. I did ask him about other engines (I was looking for a bit more power) and he said he could have put a 6 cylinder V/P in it but it would have caused the rear of the boat to be pretty crowded due to it's larger size and there would have been some retrofiting to do, so I opted to just get an exact replacement rebuilt engine. As luck would have it, I got 2 bad engines that cost me 2 seasons of boating (replaced free under warranty by V/P, but troubleshooting revealed some parts that needed replacing so that costs me more $$), but the 3rd rebuilt engine has worked like a charm and is still going strong with the boat performing as good or better than it ever has."
