"First start of the year. First time I cranked it over it fired a couple time, gave it some more gas then nothing. I think I flooded it so I gave it full throtle, nothing. Let it sit for a day tried again, I pulled a spark pluf and check for spark, it was good. Pulled off the spark arrestor and pulled throttle gas out of jet. Now when I crank it I can see fumes coming from the spark arrestor. I've got gas, I have spark, what else can I check."

It won't fire if the spark

It won't fire if the spark and the opening and closing of the valves take place at the wrong time with respect of the piston's position.

"OK I pulled it apart and it appears to be timing belt. I have new one and will install. I had a small water leak and after pulling it apart and turn the water circulation pump it is fairly loose and water leaks when I turn it. Can anyone direct me to a source for a pump, preferable car parts. Thanks El."

"Sorry David, but your model carries the "marine" pump, the automotive style won't fit. You can check if a shop in Nanaimo can rebuild it (Thompsom, etc) or see if either Anchorage or Ocean has a "good used" one (but remember, they ain't cheap). There is also a guy in Parksville who has a VP boneyard and chances are he may have one; don't know his name but you can reach him at (250) 954-2321.

Also, If I remember correctly, you got a "new to you" engine last year or two years ago. If the timing belt is gone, chances are the timing gears are pitted. In that case, consider getting a used set from an auto wrecker or the new belt won't last (try Chapman Motors)."

How do you keep the timing gears clean. If I spray them with lube the belt will slip.

"No, it won't if the tensioning is correct. I sprayed mine (in my previous boat) with Fluid Film a couple of times a year (in the driveway and at idle) and never had a problem. And in worst case scenario, you won't do any damage to the valves if the belt slips, as the engine is non-interference. What I know for sure is that timing belts don't last with pitted gears."

The AQ125B, however, has a different pump number, so I don't know if it will or will not fit:

By the way, the guy who lists the pump should check his facts. The AQ130 does not have a circulating pump,

and depending on the type of heat exchanger there are different pumps for the B21, B23 and B230 blocks.

Your engine is a B21."

"The owners manual says to never let the belt come in contact with oil but I'm with you El. In salt water environment the gears rust so quickly and the belt gets eaten. I have the belt back on, I cleaned the gears with a screw driver, the cam gear had belt material in some of the groves hence the slipping. Water pump couldn't be rebuilt, no kit available so I'm still trying to source a cheaper or used one to the $330.00 new version."

"You got that right David. Whe

"You got that right David. When it comes to choose between two evils, the safest way is usually to pick the lesser. I would never spray the timing gears on a car engine, amongst other things because they will never pit unless you keep the car parked by the sea for a few years. However, when I had my previous boat with the AQ140, the timing belt broke after a few days of owning the boat. I installed another one, but soon I decided that I was going to rebuild the engine due to other reasons. The "new" belt did not look so new after a few hours of with the old gears that I had cleaned with a wire brush. When I rebuilt the engine and installed a good-used set of automotive gears (paid over $100 for the set at Chapman Motors) I sprayed the whole engine with Fluid Film, then once or twice a year I would <font color=""0000ff"">lightly</font> spray the gears with WD40. I never had a problem and I did not see the gears rusting/pitting again. As you may have discovered by now, that little raw water pump by the alternator is not the gears' best friend

. Of course, as a matter of precaution, I always carried onboard a spare timing belt (cheap insurance for about $25)."
