"Symptoms: Wouldn't start or idle, replaced coil and starts ok idles OK. Took it out and no power, couldn't get up on plane, could this be points and condensor. Recent rebuild only 34 hours on engine."

"Still haven't installed a Pertronix kit in your distributor, David?

Points and condenser will always be a problem at some point in their life, especially in presence of moisture and are usually responsible for a number of ignition problems.

To eliminate other possibilities, you may want to start the engine, then hotwire the (+) of the coil with the (+) of the battery. If the symptoms clear and the boat runs like it should, then your problem is wiring betweent he battery and the ignition coil (loose/rusty/dirty connection, moisture, defective ignition switch). But if the symptoms persist, then is time to look at the distributor, ignition wires and coil (you have replaced the latter, so the coil should not be a suspect in this case). When you open the distributor to check the condenser and points (and hopefully to throw them away and to install a Pertronix or HotSpark electronic ignition kit) you may want to remove the cover underneath and examine the distributor weights and springs. If the distributor has broken springs or seized weights, the distributor will not have the required advance and the engine will have no power."

Thanks El. I've been waiting for this tune-up to go before I went to petronix. It is next on my list. Thanks.

"Installed petronix. Set timing, checked advance. Idles much better than points. Now for sea trials. Tach still bounces around occasionally, any ideas."

"David, I'm glad to see that the inital impression about the electronic ignition kit is good. Hopefully the sea trials will go well.

Regarding the tach jumping, make sure the grey wire connections at the back of the tach and the (-) of the coil are clean, dry and tight. Also, make sure the selector switches (or jumpers) at the back of the tach (number of cylinders and 2-4 stroke selection) are in the position they are supposed to be. You may want to exercise those switches just in case they are not making good contact."

"Thanks El. Couldn't get up on plane 1st time out. Changed prop, much better, speeds pretty close to before problems started. Still a little rough going from idle up. Hopefully I've solved the problem...... for now. After all it is a boat. I never really wanted to know about points using a timing light, but...."
