AQ 115A distributor

I have just bought about a 1972(not 100% on year) 15' Sangster boat with a AQ115A motor with the 100 leg. I have been trying to find specs on setting the points but haven't found any. I want to check the gap to see if it is right or not. I am trying to get my hands on a dwell meter right now as well. I have ordered spark plugs, wires and points. If anybody could help me with this or point me in the right direction that would great.

Thanks

Thanks Joe, That will help a lot. I have set the gap to .018. I will be picking up my timing light from work tomorrow to check the timing and see how the advance is working.

.0016 to .0020 on the gap, 59-65 on the dwell. 9 BTDC on the idle timing and 24-26 at 200 rpm.
Joe......... I think that your 200 needs to be preceeded by 4 possibly.
Can you clarify the TA for Brian?

Brian,
  • Point gap is at best, an estimate ONLY of correct Dwell. You really need to be setting Dwell... not GAP!
  • Your TA (total advance) is your more critical number. Shoot for the OEM spec.... if you can't reach this, post back!

I have a dwell meter coming for tuesday. I have figured out a big part of my running problems today. I could not get it to idle and it was running rough and missing. I thought it was an ignition problem and i was partially right. I pulled the valve cover to check the valve lash. Half of them had too much and the rest had none at all. the valves were not seating properly. After adjusting valves to proper clearance the motor idles at 900-1000 and runs alot smoother. There is still a misfire that I have yet to figure out. I am going to be ordering a pertronix ignition set-up for the distributor to replace the points. I am told this will improve my situation quite a bit. Does anybody have experience with the pertronix set-up? the timing is at 9 btdc at idle and 22 btdc at 2000 rpm.

I have the Hot Spark brand in my AQ130 and it's great. No more messing with points. Just be sure you don't reverse the polarity. I bought their 3 ohm, internal resistance coil and took the resister out of the ignition circuit.

Like Rick said, total advance timing is more important than at idle so go ahead and bump it up a bit to be at 24 to 26 at 2000 rpm. That is, as long as it still starts and idles easily. The weights in that distributor should be all the way out at 2000 rpm but check to see if you're getting more advance as you go past that. You shouldn't but it's a good idea to check.
