"I HAVE AN APPROXIMATE 1994 MA

"I HAVE AN APPROXIMATE 1994 MARINER 75 HP ON A 16' FLATS BOAT. BOAT WAS RUNNING STRONG. WHILE FISHING ONE DAY CRANKED UP TO HEAD TO ANOTHER SPOT, THE MOTOR STARTED AND IDLED FINE ONCE WE GOT ON A PLAIN THE MOTOR CUT OUT AND LOST MOST OF ITS POWER. THE BOAT WOULD NOT GET BACK ON A PLAIN, EVEN WHEN IT HAD A FULL THROTTLE IT WOULD ONLY TURN UP ABOUT 3/8 OF THE R.P.M.'S THAT IT USUALLY WOULD.
IF YOU PUT THE BOAT IN NEUTRAL IT WILL RED LINE ON THE TACH ALL DAY LONG, AS SOON AS YOU PUT IT IN GEAR IT STILL WILL NOT GET OVER ABOUT 3/8 OF WHAT IT WOULD USUALLY RUN AT. I REPLACED THE FUEL LINE FROM THE TANK TO THE MOTOR (I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE SUCKING AIR?) THAT DIDNT WORK. I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC HE SAID THE CARB'S NEEDED TO BE RE-BUILT, THAT DIDNT WORK. NEXT MECHANIC SAID IT WAS THE HIGH R.P.M. STRAND IN THE STATOR, THAT DIDNT WORK EITHER.
PLEASE HELP, THIS NOT BEING ABLE TO FISH IS KILLING ME.

BY THE WAY IT IS A 3 CYLINDER 75 H.P. MARINER AROUND 1994."

"check compression on cylinder

"check compression on cylinders, check fuel lines between engine coupling from front of motor to fuel pump, then check lines from fuel pump to carbs. a slight pin hole or crack can cause loss of fuel pressure and it can make the engine run poorly. the reason it revs in neutral is that the engine is not under load therefore requires less fuel air mixture to detonate to cause combustion."
