I'm hoping someone in the forum will have some clearer advice than I got from the factory regarding filling my 5.4" Seapro gearcases. The factory specifications say that the gear cases are supposed to be filled with 33.1 oz (approximate) of 90 weight high performance gear lube. On a Seapro gearcase the drain and vent plugs are on the side of the torpedo and also behind the propeller. Mercury recommends that the leading edge of the skeg be trimmed to level with the ground then filling the gearcase from the bottom plug. The problem with this method is there is no way that you can get even close to the 33 ounces into the gearcase filling it this way. I wrote and called the factory and I got conflicting answers. One response was to insert the 33 ounces following the factory recommended filling method ( impossible, at least for me). Another recommendation from a phone call was to fill the gearcase tilting it as recommended in the owner's manual not worrying if the full 33 ounces goes in. When I fill the gearcase the way they recommend I can only get in about 22 ounces. Does anyone have any insight on this problem? When draining the gearcases I wait for an hour to be sure they are completely empty. My inclination is to fill the gearcase with the whole 33 ounces by tipping it differently than recommended.
