"This is a two cylinder, 40 hp. Merc made in the late 80s (and also built as a 35 hp. motor). It has only 33.3 cubes to make 40 hp, so I think they are rather 'small' horses.

Anyone out there have any experience with either of these motors?

Thanks. Jeff

PS: I have a race to run with my dink boat, and the Merc 200 isn't going to make it! A 402--if it's worth owning--might be the answer: Not much heavier, and with 50 % more cubes. Of course, that pre-supposes that it's a decent performer."

"I have 1 40 that now runs great and a 35 for parts or rebuild. Good engine, easy to work on, but the down side is the crank. The center bearing is not a true bearing, just a block of alluminum the reeds screw to. The crank rides on the block and will score itself untill it breaks in half. The lower bearing is also going to fail and tear up either the splines in the crank or the drive shaft, but its only $20 plus a gasket set. That being said if its still in running shape it should last some more. The 402 ended and became the 40merc in the early 80s. More parts for the 40 than 402 can be found. Email for more info. John"
