" Hi all, i have a 112hp Johnson outboard that was rebuilt just before i purchased it. I double oiled it to break it in and it runs fine. However, when it is in idle, it will run fine for five sometimes fifteen seconds and then it will start choking and the motor will die unless i give it some gas. Im wondering if the double oil has fouled the plugs and that they are the only thing i need to replace. Or does this sound like a carb problem? I need ti size up the situation before i go "fixing" the problem. Also the tale tell usually works but sometimes when idling it dosent pump any water until i give it throttle. But other times it pumps just fine while i am monitoring it and the idol. What could this be? Any and all comments are welcome and i thank all of you in advance for your help! "

"C_Hilbun.... The fact that the engine was recently rebuilt, and now it doesn't run properly indicates that it was not rebuilt properly. This results in a case whereas anything and a combination of things could be wrong which would be just about impossible to diagnose without actually checking the engine physically.

However, normally a problem such as what you describe would be related to carburetion, which could be incorrectly set floats, wrong jets, jets installed in the wrong locations etc.

Also possible that the fuel pump is failing. This can be checked by simply pumping the fuel primer bulb.... acting as a manual fuel pump.

Check the compression, should be approx 100+ psi and even on all cylinders. With the s/plugs removed, check the spark, should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.

The water flow problem indicates that either the water pump was installed incorrectly, or needs replacing. Ask whoever rebuilt the engine... did they install new thermostats? The engine cannot be run without them!

Let us know what you find.

What about the recirc. check

What about the recirc. check valves? Try trimming the motor up to see if it picks up RPM's at idle.
