"I own a 12' Smokercraft with a 15hp Johnson in good running condition, but with two other fishermen (or one fat one) the craft struggles to plane. Can a hyrofoil help with getting her to- and staying on plane. We've tried a variety weight-shifting and engine angles to limited success, and cavitation is not a problem because the motor is actually a long-shaft version."

"Not really. That's a lot of weight for a 15 to plane. You might try a lower pitched prop, but be careful not to over-rev her."

"Alright, I'll tell my fishin' buddies to start dieting.
Meanwhile, are there any performance gains or drawbacks from using a hydrofoil on such a small engine with a more appropriate weight load?"

"I put one on hte 9.8 Merc I used on my 9 foot dinkboat (actually a hydro--don't tell the wife!) It didn't help planning off all htat much, but I was able to eliminate some porposing action.

The bottom line is, get 'em to diet, or leave one of them at the dock; or get a 20 hp.

Jeff"
