i just got a boat and the moto

i just got a boat and the motor was ran before i purchase it and sat in the garage about a month. went to start it up did not start. tryed and spray some starter fluid and it started on high idle but could not get it to idle normal at low idle it would died out.

"First of all, what kind of mo

"First of all, what kind of motor are you speaking of? The model number is needed to know what you are speaking of. Stop using starting fluid as this may ruin your motor. If it's a two cycle motor, you are running your motor with no lubricant, and are sure to score the cylinders or pistons.

Cheers"

evinrude 1973 model 2cycle mot

evinrude 1973 model 2cycle motor it only start at high idle wont stay normal idle thank for letting me know about the starter fluid .

"Assuming you have good spark,

"Assuming you have good spark, good compression, you're gonna have to clean your carburater. Go to a reliable auto parts store and buy a good carb cleaner, not just a can of gumout, but a good carb cleaner. Take your carb apart and clean it, needs to be very clean. Take a strand or two of copper wire twisted together to clean small holes. Use compressed air to blow out carb cleaner and therefore old goop, deposits, stuff from the carb. The inside of the carb needs to look perfect, the jets, fuel passage ways, gaskets, all need to be clean and free of defect. If not perfect, FIND YOUR MODEL NUMBER and buy a carb kit and rebuild your carb."

evin rude i remove the carb. a

evin rude i remove the carb. and the passage are all cloged up i also remove a fuel hose and blew thrue it an and i got it to unplug so i really was pluged up thank you for your help now im going to take it to the shop and clean it with throttle cleaner and air pressure. anything i should be carefull with.

itook the carb out and the bow

itook the carb out and the bowl was empty on all three of them what could be clogged lines or port to carb any suggestion

anyone out ther is it possible

anyone out ther is it possible to install a inline filter between the original fuel filter. just for safty matters 1973 evinrude 2cycle motor. so i will be having to filter insted of one.

"The one filter should be ok.

"The one filter should be ok. usually the gunk comes from old fuel evaporating out of the carbs. The parts of gasoline that don't evaporate are left behind as gum and varnish.

If you are tempted to add a filter, I would add a large canister type filter. The filter element looks like a car's oil filter. These are most easily mounted somewhere on the boat between the fuel tank and the connection to the motor. Most of this style filter include a water separator as well."

"PP, yeah, clogged huh? Well,

"PP, yeah, clogged huh? Well, here's the thing, dont let your guard down, when you think it's clean, let things dry out good. Look to see if white/tan deposits(spots) form on the inside of the carb parts. If this happens, all those spots have to be scraped out of there. If you dont there's not a filter in the world that will stop your carb from clogging time after time. Remember, those carbs have to be clean in order to work properly. It's frustrating sometimes, but you'll get it eventually. Also, make sure you clean out the fuel tank and lines too, there may be a bunch of gook in there too."

thank for the advice you guy a

thank for the advice you guy are pro.i will give update on my progress.

i clean the carb out but it se

i clean the carb out but it seems to be starving. could it be that the drum i used for water it was not sitting straight because the drum is to big so the motor was tilted and maybe the float it closing and the motor staring but i took the drum out and im going to cut it to the wright fit for the motor will be sitting straght up i think that my problem now if someone out ther have another idea please let me know. it idle but dies out.

Check your fuel lines for gas

Check your fuel lines for gas or air leaks. High speed jets could be clogged/restricted. Crack in a gasket someplace. I'm thinking you're gonna need to rebuild the carbs with a complete carb kit.

so tilt on the motor does not

so tilt on the motor does not effect the operation of the carb.

ok you say that you cleaned th

ok you say that you cleaned the carbs with choke cleaner. you should take carbs completly apart and clean them with parts cleaner. i mean soak them in a can of cleaner i did mine 24 hours and then blue them out and ran a wire down all ports and passeges. your slow idle ports might be clogged. good luck

i did soak the carb and blew t

i did soak the carb and blew them out beleive me i made sure it was clean. i think when i was starting the motor it was not completly straight inorder to maintain idle. couse the drum i was using was to big to fit in straight the motor was tilted so maybe the float was not level and it was starving the motor out of gas.if i open the throttle it rev up ok it only on idle does not maintain it. i cut out the drum and going to try it on later i just dont know what to do next if this is not the problem.

anyone outthere i just want to

anyone outthere i just want to know what hp motor do i need for my 15ft fiberglass boat im not looking for speed im just looking to get out ther and do a little fishing.

"Tilting the motor isnt gonna

"Tilting the motor isnt gonna have an efect on the float letting fuel in. If you have good spark/compression, the rest of it has to do with fuel, carb not clean, out of adjustment, leak in the fuel line, crack in a gasket, something like that. A carb can act up just by being dirty or worn out, not just clogged. Heck, a bad crankshaft seal can makle it idle poorly.

Just to make sure, check the compression, make sure it's close to the same compression on each cylinder. Check the spark, find, buy, or make a spark checker, make sure each cylinder has spark that will jump a quarter inch gap. After that, adjust your fuel mixture on the carb. Turn the low speed adjustment screw in gently seating, then turn it out a turn and a half. While the motor is idling turn the screw in 1/8 turns at a time, do this slowly, waiting for the motor to adjust to the new amount of fuel. As you turn it in the motor will increase in rpm, and then seem to bog down, when it bogs, turn the screw back till it reaches it's best idle. Do these things, as they are like basic of the basics to getting a motor to run. Or take it to someone who is capible of performing these tasks...."

Evin Rude is on the right trac

Evin Rude is on the right track. Your problem could be as simple as spark plugs. But check copmpression and firing strength to make certain
before buying anouther carb kit.

i gave up on my motor now any

i gave up on my motor now any one out there could tell me what size of motor could handle my 15ft fiberglass boat.im sending the other motor to the shop.
