I am having a problem on a 89

I am having a problem on a 89 gt 150 and the manual does not go deep enough into troubleshooting the components. (see other post) Anybody care to explain more in depth than manual??? I have a high idle and need info on how the power pack and timer base is changing the firing. Thanks for any help Mike

"the pwr pack,advances your cold start timing,as well as,everytime u start,timer base,is outa the pic,in this situation,.."

"As the timer base advances, that simply changes the firing time Before Top Dead Center."

How can you be sure the power

How can you be sure the power pack is giving a signal for the timer base to advance? Is the black/white stripe wire from the power pack to the timer base the wire that advances the timer base? I am not sure it is getting quickstart I am running 1100 rpm and I tried grounding the temp switch wires and no change. It is a st/sl model number and has only one power pack. And 35 amp charge system.

The timer base is not electron

The timer base is not electronically advanced other than the quickstart feature. Advancement is made via mechanical linkage.

"Mike,
If your manual doesn&#

"Mike,
If your manual doesn't go deep enough into trouble shooting then I'm assuming that you are not using a OMC manual. Get an OMC manual, go to Ignition System which is section 3. In the table of contents you will find Functional Tests - QuickStart. Every question you have asked is answered. The fact that your idle RPM is 1100 relates to the QuickStart function because it incorporates an RPM limit of 1100. The problem could be something as simple as a bad port side temp switch. The price of a good manual could save you from needlessly replacing expensive ignition components."

Thanks Allan I have been using

Thanks Allan I have been using seloc and cdi electronics web site. Will do some looking and see if I can find one somewhere.

"the pack,...kicks it up to 11

"the pack,...kicks it up to 1100....now,it depends on how other things are set,as to where it will end up,on a flushette...
the way it is supposed to wk,...is it kicks it up,to 1100,in the water,.until,...106 degrees,or a throttle setting,...higher,..than 1100,it then cancels quick start,by design..."

"gordon I removed yellow/red w

"gordon I removed yellow/red wire going to power pack today. I was told on another post that that is the signal to power pack to start quickstart. It made no difference in rpm idled at 1000 to 1100 rpm. This was out of water, I did carry it last week and put in lake and still idled at same rpm. I had mech watch when i touched wires back together and saw no difference in timing location."

"To properly test Quick start

"To properly test Quick start function:
Disconnect both black/white and red/yellow going to power-pack.
Start engine, but be sure it runs below 1000 rpm at idle.
Short touch the yellow/red (power-pack side with a 12V+, and idle should go up to about 1100. If using a timing light at the same time, You might observe that the engine 'misses' from time to time. The speed limiter regulates by cutting ignition pulses.
Then take the black/white (pp-side) to ground, and the idle should drop to below 1000.
Do this test with boat in water NO MUFFS!!!!!!!!!"

"will try in water morten, we

"will try in water morten, we did have temp switch unhooked and did ground it. forgot about the yellow/red wire only having 12volts momentarily. If no change when i do this does this single out the pack??"

"Well thought I would update t

"Well thought I would update the results, The mech I work with (he works on boats on the side)after trying a few more things told me he would buy the power pack himself that was how sure he was of it. So I declined and ordered it from boatfix, I installed it and called him to meet me at the lake to test it. It cranked as it should and we was able to see the timing jumping around at start. I went ahead and grounded the white/black wire and took it out of quickstart and we was able to get the timing adjusted at idle. We then killed it and recranked, and it idle high shortly and then went to about 750 to 800rpm. Then we set the high side on the trailer, The mech wants to recheck this week cause I only throttled it to 5200 rpm. He wants to recheck at wide open to see if timing is right on it. He test drove it and was satisfied. With work and other drawbacks I took it out yesterday morning and all seemed well. To me it sounded and ran a lot different than before. I hope I'm finished for a while and can go enjoy it now. Thanks for everybodys help. Mike"

Glad if any of my inputs was of help."

no I didn't I am going to

no I didn't I am going to try to find one. most of the searches come up with seloc. But there has to be somebody that sells them. And Thanks for your help. Mike
