antifreeze leek out exaust

I have an older silverton, 79 , 318 chrysler twins, seems to only happen on cold starts, blows antifreeze out exhaust, none in oil, but I did notice a lower compression reading on one cylinder, 80 pounds compared to 120(not too bad) motor runs surprisingly well, I was considering trying a bottle of barrs leek head repair, im comserned its may clog up the heat exchanger, can anyone please input where can antifreze come threw the exaust(only on cold start then its fine) and if I could harm anything elese with this bottle of barrs leak, I no its not the rite way but would really like to get another season out of her before I can dump more money in , sorry such a long thread, hope someone reads and can please reply, thanks alot and happy boating to all!!

I don't know about the 318 but the 440s don't have anti-freeze in the exhaust system. With a low cylinder i would suspect a head gasket.

Thanks for ur reply, the antifreeze in the exaust is the problem tho.was wondering if this bottelof barrs leak could make my problems worse and maybe clog up the heat Exchanger before i try it?anyone know what the inside of these things look like, are there small chambers like on an oilcooler

I had similar symptoms with my 318 (low compression on one cylinder and losing antifreeze). New head gasket and exhaust elbow and end-cap gaskets seemed to fix it. I don't recommend the stop leak goop ... tried that first with no success.

If its at start up only then hit the head before you blow that cylinder, have a gander at that plug ,the 80 lbs one,you know what burnt antifreeze smells like

80 psi is too low. Sounds like it may indeed be head gasket as suggested. Don't bandaid it, fix it before you get stranded. I don't want to assume anything so I'll ask; what makes you think coolant is coming out of the exhaust, coolant level dropping? Sure it's not steam? Just asking. One more thing, did you try starting the engine with the rad cap off the heat exchanger and look for bubbling?

Well there is green stuff in the water, must be anrifreeze,as for the heat exchange,Dose this engine have 2,because there is a long cylinder running down the side of the block, just under the exaust,I thought that was the H E so theres no cap, however i do have a type collector rite over the thermostat housing, this is where iv been adding fluid, dosent seem to be bubbling or have any oil in it,also checked the plugs and they seem fine as well, not white,no water,or sweet smell. She just blows a quart or so on cold starts, she'll be fine threw out the day but once it sits 24hrs is wen its a problem. This also happen last year at the beginning of the season wen the sea water is much colder.Only lost fluid a few times then it was fine all season and I wasent exactly easy on her,3000 rpm much of the time and no leeks,It just kills me to rip apart an engine that is running so well. Was curious about this 30$ bottle of barrs head fix so my question I guess is wut could it hurt, can it clog up the H E,and as for getting stranded I do have twins, wouldn't be fun but im sure i could make It home, thanks agin guys..hope the start of the season is treating you guys better then me

Look at your engine closely to determine if the anti-freeze goes to the exhaust manifolds (which is normal on FWC 318s). If so, there can be a leak at the manifolds rear connection where the riser bolts to it. A plate and gasket there keeps the anti-freeze from leaking into the exhaust. Easy to fix if that's the problem and, if so, Barr's WON'T fix it.

Well, we took her out for the first today and just like last year the leak fixed itself? I didn't even put the barrs leak in,go figure, guess ill keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Still thinking of trying this bottel of head fix to regain the compression on the one cylinder 80psi compared to 120 and motor is running surprisingly well, guess well see after the boat sits a few days if the leak comesback,,if so I guess she's a runner and dosent like to sit..lol wich is ok cuss we get out almost everyday anyhow, just have to keep an eye on it,wish I had an antifreeze gauge so I didn't have to open the hatch every time, thanks agin for the helpful info
