"Hi all, Im new to the board and love the site, great advice and very helpful. My question is how to winterize my 1987, 165 hp 4cyl mercruiser with a closed cooling system. Thanks"

"It's best that you get a service manual for your specific engine year. They are available from this site or try searching eBay for the year and model of your engine for used factory service manuals.

Complete winterization includes the following:

Tune engine for next season.

Add fuel preservative and top off fuel tank
Run the engine on earmuffs until it reaches oper. temp. and lube the gimbal bearing while it is idling. Later--w/engine off lube zerk fittings on the OD, engine coupler and steering.

Use fogging oil per instructions.

Change engine oil and filter.

Change OD oil and inspect for water infiltration

Remove OD and lube U-joints; inspect bellows and other soft parts. Change impeller if maore than 2 years old. Replace other parts as needed.

Drain and flush block, exhaust mans., riser and heat exchanger of all coolant and raw water. Refill block, tank, etc. w/ auto antifreeze 50:50 mix and add pink antifreeze to heat exchanger and any part of engine that has raw water.

Remove, clean and charge batteries; store in the garage off the concrete floor; recharge monthly or use a trickle charger maintainer.

Clean flame arrester and spray engine with Mercruiser rust inhibiter.

Disconnect main engine electrical (barrel) plug.

Replace worn "V" belts.

Open all closed hatch covers for ventilation. Pull hull plug for drainage. Store covered with ventilation to prevent moisture and mold buildup.

Service trailer bearings.

Don't blame me if I forgot anything; consult the manual."

"Thanks Guy, I wouldnt blame you. Im pretty handy with boats for the most part, but the checklist you gave will be helpful to remember everything, The older I get, the more spaced I seem to be. Off hand do you know how many and where the block drains are, Its a typical inline 4 cyl Merc, and it has a 460 Ford head Im told. I know about the ones on the heat exchanger. Ive got an older Seloc Manual but Im not overly impressed with it. Thanks."

I would the same as above for winterizing. To keep moisture out I use Dri z air or something similar. Just add crystals into the container add it will pull the moisture out of the air and trap into the container. Kept my boat interior dry all winter. I added crystals and empty water out of the container once a month. The cost is 5.00 to 10.00 dollars for each kit (I used two.) and maybe 5.00 for replacement crystals. North Idaho
