"I've got a '79 AQ260A

"I've got a '79 AQ260A and it won't start. Problem began a sometime ago with hard starting. It would crank a few times and stop. Now it just cranks for a second or so and stops. Not enough to get the engine going. I've checked the battery, positive cable, and pulled the starter. When they checked the starter it 'ran' fine at 125 amps. But the start gear never retracts. Is this right or is the starter bad?"

"Check that the ground cable b

"Check that the ground cable between the engine and the (-) of the battery is in good condition and that the contacts are clean both on the engine and the battery sides. Also, you may have to replace the start gear (the 'Bendix' as it is sometimes known)."

"I couldn't easily get to

There was some corrosion on the starter relay, but I've cleaned that off, and the rest of the connections are good. Considering that the bendix isn't moving in and out, is it worth reinstalling after I check the (-) cable or better to just replace the bendix while it's out?"

"Up to you, but if a bit of WD
