posted earlier about 84 J150 vacuum switch .If its leaking gas when I prime carbs i assume its sucking air when pulling a vacuum .So could that be the reason for the rough running and heavy smoke .Again would it be a problem to just block off the hose going to switch.thanks Chuck

You could block it off as a test.---------------------Find the real reason for the rough running with some easy simple trouble shooting.---------------Do a compression test.--------------Check to see that you have spark on all 6 cylinders that will jump a gap of 7/16"-----------------Look into the carburetors bores at full throttle on the lake ( strong flashlight ) and compare the amount of fuel coming up the main jets.----------------Run it with a timing light on each cylinder and see how spark behaves ( observe the flashing light ) using the light as a " poor man's scope"

In agreement with racerone, and would add the following.

Leaking vacuum switch would allow the fuel side of the VRO draw air which in turn would cause the oil side of the VRO to pump excessive oil (much smoke).

Blocking the vacuum switch off temporarily as a test is okay BUT to block it off permanently would eliminate any warning should a fuel restriction occur.
