On the way back to the boat launch the other day I ran the motor(1995 50HP Johnson) out of fuel less than 200 meters from the launch. I switched over to the other tank and it ran fine to the dock but when throttled down to idle it stalled and has had this problem ever since. The motor ran flawlessly till running out of fuel so I figured it must have picked up some debris form the bottom of the tank. Today cleaned and rebuilt the carbs and they appeared to be spotless as I just did them in the spring. After re assembly it seems to be worse as it won't even idle on muffs in the driveway and is running real rough. I set the idle mixture scews at 3.5 turns out which is the baseline given in the Clymer manual for these carbs and adjusting them from there doesn't seem to help(less smoke obviously when leaned out but still won't idle without the assistance of the fast idle lever). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"Thanks for the input Jamie. Link & synch was done buy a local OMC shop after the carbs were rebuilt in the spring. When I rebuilt the carbs again today none of the linkages were touched other than the linkage between the 2 carbs. After reinstallation I backed of the screw on the one carb to ensure that both throttle plates were closed at idle. Am I missing something obvious? What else other than picking up some crap in the bottom of the tank when running it empty would cause such a sudden change? Also, I didn't mention that the motor still runs great at everything above idle. I did a compression test today out of curiosity and both cylinders within a couple of psi of 140."

So this afternoon decided to try the synch & link following step by step the instructions in the Clymer manual. Is it just me or is that manual missing some info. How are you supposed to check the timing at idle if the motor won't run at idle. It actually runs much worse when everything is set to the baselines stated in the manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I took this week of work to do some salmon fishing while it's hot out there and instead I'm dealing with this.

Have you tried both tanks ? Are you using the same hose for both ? Do you have any in-line fuel filters ? You might check the fuel pump.

I've tried both tanks and two different lines. I do not have an inline filter but I checked the screen at the pump and it was clean.

This motor wouldn't idle at all before trying this stuff, even on muffs in the driveway. After running seafoam through it for about 5 minutes it now idles perfectly smooth at about 1000rpm on muffs."

With a little tuning got it to idle so took it out for a lap. after running for a while at around 3000-4000 rpm it just died and would not restart. After getting home pulled the plugs. they were damp with fuel but there is no spark at all.I tried turning it over with the red connector to the ignition switch unplugged and still no spark. What next?"
