Graham, I would like to express my amazement and thanks to the help ive seen you post here : )
oh yeah anyway, the serial is
40EM S 110466 W
guessing the 'EM' bit means electric manual? the 's' bit confuses me because its a long shaft and i would assume this means short shaft? maybe its been extended? Also the motor is a bitch to start.....
anyone using this engine with baystar hydraulic steering? if so, did you have to grind away the engine mounts for it to fit?
so many questions, but any help greatly appreciated ; )}"

"I believe you have a 1989 model but you didn't post part of your serial (6E9), which is the Yamaha equivalent of the Mariner that you have.

There is no one big data base that I am aware of on the net. There are a number of sources that give you bits and pieces.

I have put my own together, but do not post it on the web because a couple of the mfgs (Merc in particular) can get a little threatening about publishing their stuff if you aren't a Merc dealer..."

I would have thought you were doing merc a huge favour letting people look up the year of their engine? especially as they need to know this to purchase the correct parts? Blimey, how I hate corporate bully's! Im a musician and Ive had my music used with out consent before and understand copyright laws are needed, but serial numbers on engines!! thats ridiculous, shame on merc......
whats their argument on that?

Merc never encoded the date into the "serial".

That is good for Merc and here's what I mean.

Take a 1995, 25 horse Merc with a production number of 0G54.... that sits around a dealer until 2002. The motor is technically 7 years old, but has never been sold/run etc.

To the dealer it would "normally" have to sell at an extreme discount. But not if your a Merc dealer.

Because if you sold it in 2002, then it was a "brand new" model with full warranty. And since the 2002's were mechanically identical to the 95's, then nobody looking at it could even dispute the year."
