another 305 ?

i had the 305 that i was going to put guts in another block but i found aguy that decided to stop boating and i bought the engine out his boat put it in my boat everything bolted up fine but now my question is on the motor mounts there is about an inch or so ajustment on either side up and down how can i tell where it needs to be

One way of doing this is installing just the bellhousing (flywheel cover) and measure the vertical distance between the center of the primary drive shaft and the boat bilge. Then, when installing the engine, you should adjust the mounts to have that same distance between the middle of the crankshaft pulley and the bilge.
