Anode plate replacement on 1990 alpha one out drive

1990 Merc 5.7 with alpha 1 outdrive. Everyone tells me it takes a 1/2 inch socket to change the anode plate over the prop. A 1/2 inch socket will not fit through the access hole. Niether will the replacement bolt. Tried Allen wrench but found out the head is a hex. Smaller sockets do not fit.The 1/2 inch one does not fit through the access hole. How do you change this?

Grind down the socket, or enlarge the hole

what size tools are you trying.may need a 1/4 inch drive 1/2 in socket.

Never seen a I/O with a bolt/only allens. they used 2 sizes.
