"I am currently rewiring the entire boat and just installed a new DC panel that has an Ammeter for the house and a volt meter for three battery banks. I purchased all new gauges for the lower helm and fly bridge but did not purchase new ammeters. Are they really necessary? I could use the space on the lower helm for my fume detector and high water alarm.

"After owning several boats over the years, I've come to the conclusion that an ammeter on the engine battery system is marginally useful. A voltmeter is more useful. Now as to the house battery system... I could make an argument for an ammeter on that system, however, I'd not mount it at the helm station, but rather near the house batteries themselves."
