"If an alternator gets flooded

"If an alternator gets flooded, does it usually die out.....Are they expensive to replace...I think I have to replace my starter, as the flooding that happend 3 weeks ago, might gotten to it. It doesnt crank. Going to try to get it tested. Should I do the same for the alt.

If the alternator and starter were submerged for any length of time the starter will need to be inspected for water intrusion since it is supposed to be sealed. Most likely it will need replaced. The alternator will need replaced because it is not sealed, only spark proof. Note: if both items are the original 1990 models that came with the boat, replace them. Just match up the year, model and part nos. The site below is a merc. part catalogue by engine serial no. There are several alternators and starters for the 4.3L that year. Delco,Mando and Prestolite to name a few.
