alternator problems

Ok guys on top of the fuel problem, now alternator also.
97 mercruiser 4.3

If the battery is hooked up, it will drain in about a day. I noticed that the alternator gets hot even if the boat hasn't been started when the batter is hooked up. About 2 years ago I put this alternator on, My orginal was a mando. The guy talked me into a delco, said it would work. I took the alternator to the alternator shop this week, the tech said every thing is ok. So is it possible that the alternator tech is wrong. I can have the battery hooked up and un hook the purple and purple strip wire and the meter doesn't show an amp draw, when the 2 wires are hooked up I draw a constant 3 amps and again the alternator heats up. If it is not the alternator, what else in the alternator circuit should I check?
Any advise is appreciated thanks guys

double check the polarity of the wires going to the alternator.try drawing a circuit diagram of the wires, and then take the drawing and the alternator back to the techie.the alternator shouldnt get hot.

Alright guys thanks for the help I figured out the problem. With the mando alternator, which is the factory, the wires were color coated so no problem there, with the delco they had different color wires, I had the wires backwards and that was causing the whole problem, also my battery gauge is sticking some too. After switching the wires i no longer have the battery draining problem. Thanks again Problem solved... :)
