Alternator hookup connections 5.8L Help!

Hello, I have a "late Mando style" alternator. I have looked at the photo page about how to hook them up but I am still confused and hope you can provide more info. Can you tell me where on the motor the connections on the alternator should go to? Such as,I see the excite and sense but I dont know what that means and where they should be connected to on the motor itself. Do any connections go to the starter or what? I need exactly what/where should come from the motor to the alternator and what/where should be going from the alternator to the motor.
The old alternator was removed without us having the chance to see how it hooked up and the motor wiring is not clear to say what went where.
Thanks much for any help! mando rear close up.JPG

Post your engine/drive model and perhaps a photo of it.

Yes, the charge lead will eventually make a connection to the "common" cable at the starter motor solenoid.

I'm going to suggest that the purple wire is the excite circuit, and that the red wire is for system voltage sensing.

If this is a direct replacement alternator, your engine harness should be equipped with the correct color codes and wire fittings.

Ok, I think I have my answer. I went back to the shop I got it from and asked. If anyone could double confirm, It'd be appreciated!
The alternator grounds thru the mounting bracket as long as it is grounded.
B+ is the main battery connection so wire from battery to post
Red wire doubles back and connects to B+ post
Purple wire connects to + side of coil
P is Tachometer post.
The rest we don't need to use.
He said some people run the main cable to starter and then connect the starter to alternator with a cable to direct the main power but it dosent matter which way.
I do need to find the tachometer wire on the motor though.

Rick, Our motor is a bit of a hodpodge. original was a 5.8 EFI Volvo Penta with 290 DP out drive. But its not a direct stern drive. Motor is inboard with a driveshaft to the out drive. Shortish version is the org motor core got trashed (before we bought it) so we are replacing with a 5.8L 351 Windsor which is basically the same thing except oil dipstick is on other side. Going from fuel injected to carborated too. We are bolting up all the useable parts and replacing the bad. It has not been as cut and dry as it seems like it should have been. :) Boat harness and motor harness have same plug but the wires are all colored different and in different orders and numbers. Nothing has been true plug and play material. I have been having a very hard time finding any real info about the electrical systems so we have resorted to chasing wires and testing and trial and error.

Diagree!
There is a Chasis Negative terminal, and your OEM wiring will include this circuit. The OEM wants it there for good reason.

Incorrect..... although schematically it would work.
As said, the "charge" lead will connect to the "Common" cable connection at the starter motor solenoid terminal.
IOW, your main Battery Cable that leaves the MBSS and heads to the engine.

Unlikely that your helm tachometer uses an alternator pulse. I'd need to look at the OEM wiring schematic.
Most that I see are ignition pulse.

The rest we don't need to use.

Yeah.... the old trial and error always seems to work.

Have fun.... you'll eventually get her done.
