Alternate Lower for 1972 Johnson 50hp

Hello everyone, A question for those who might know.

OK so is it possible to use a different year Lower and possibly use a later model with mechanical shifter on my 1972 50es72c series outboard? which has electric shift.

I am looking for a short shaft. I believe Johnson had switched back to Mechanical in 1973 or 74.

Fact for you.----Only a 71 or 72 model 50 hp lower unit is a direct swap.----What is the issue with your lower unit ?-----They are simple / well engineered / very reliable.

Ok I have a hole on the right side possibly drilled. I got this lower second hand. Is it worth welding or order a new one.

??-------That hole has to be there !------Do not plug those drain holes.

I will not plug it once I ran my camera up in there I saw it was the water drain, I was not sure since it is not symmetrical in shape. I t has a little edge from age that is all I will clean it up. Thank you racerone.
