"Hello All - am replacing alternator on 1988 OMC Cobra 5.7 (#574APARY). Original was 51 amps; replacments for the OEM part number are 68 amps. Any concern with installing a higher output rated alternator - ie: overcharging battery, overheated wiring ? My thinking is thats its not an issue given it will output based on demand. But I wanted your opinions. Thanks, Joe"

"Amps are generally whats available for consumtion. As in, ie "current "draw"" You would have a higher current potential for power of equipment. If the wires are to small for the load then they will act like a fuse and melt. 2 cent"

"51 to 68 probably not a big enough increase for the wiring to become an issue. I'd probably discharge the battery, boost to start and then while the alternator is working it's hardest to recharge, feel the output wires to see if it's getting hot or not. Or, if you have one of those "toaster" type battery load testers, you could load it that way while running.
But 99% sure non issue... I just like to be sure."

Hey Oil Slick and Hy Stat - re

Hey Oil Slick and Hy Stat - really do appreciate the input. We're all thinking alike - and I like the idea of discharging the bat and checking wires upon charging. I do have a "toaster" battery load tester so will do ! I like being sure too !! Thanks again very much.
