Alpha1 v8 with 888 outdrive

"I just recently purchased a 1987 Chris Craft Scorpion 196. Under the hood it has a what looks like a Alpha1 260 V8. The outdrive says 888 and V8 on it. From everything I've been able to find on the internet this should be impossible, right? My question to people more knowledgeable is. 1) Have you ever hear of such a combination? 2) Could i use any Alpha1 outdrive like one off a 4cyl of 6 cyl engine? Any help of insight would be greatly appritiated."

I want to know if i can use an Alpha1 out drive from a 4 or 6cyl alpha one engine. I also want to know how is it possible to put a 888 out drive on a Alpha1 engine? Also How do i identify my engine? Is is a ford, Chevy, or Chrysler? I'm a Honda mechanic i don't know much about American engines,"

888s were the Pre-alphas that were bolted to the Ford V8s,....The gear ratio should be the 1.5/1....

No,.... The Gear Ratio will be All Wrong.......

While there are a few issues to watch for,....
The Alphas,+ the Pre-Alphas are Direct Interchangeable drives.....

Ayuh,........ I'm guessing it's a Chevy........ Distrubuter should be at the Rear of the motor......
Fords have it in the Front......
And,.......
Chrylers have Never been used by Mercruiser......."

"Thank you for the info! From what you said, i can either rebuild my 888 or find an Alpha1 out drive from a V8 alpha engine and it should bolt up to my Alpha1 engine. The Alpha1 out drive has to come from a V8 because of the gear ratios. My engine has the distributor on the back of the engine so its Chevy motor. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain things."
