"Hi, can anyone give me an idea of how to remove the complete UJ driveshaft. I need to replace the UJs and have been offered a brand new complete shaft for about the same price as the parts. Is it easier to replace the joints or can I pull the shaft easily enough. My manual only talks about removing the whole shaft/bearing/gear assembly then dismantling. This is a 1990 Alpha1 Gen1.
Thanks again
Derek

"Depends on the upper gearset.

"Depends on the upper gearset.
Loosen the carrier nut, pull input assem. out,
change parts, IF the gearset slides off, just re-torque the nut ,IF the gears need to be pressed off, use the "Rolling torque" method, install shaft, tighten carrier nut, rehill with oil."

"Hi bt Doctur, thanks, thats similar to what my manual says.I had been wondering if there was any tricks to save pulling the gearset as I do not have the special tool mentioned in the manual to remove the carrier nut."

derek does it have a vibration

derek does it have a vibration my does at about 1200 rpms in that area same outdrive on a baja 97 with a 350 gm.

"Hi Mike, no, the only vibrati

"Hi Mike, no, the only vibration seems to be on full lock at trawling speed. I have not yet pulled the drive to investigate as I have a few jobs to be done. This is next after I refit the fuel tank."

"If you do not have the specia

"If you do not have the special tools to do the job then either buy them or let someone who has the tools do it.

You do NOT want to reassemble without proper torque settings and you need the correct tools especially for the upper carrier retaining nut.

Not to mention the correct feelergage set up tools to check gear hieght etc etc ect.

This is not a job that you can slap apart, exchange some parts and slap back together.

Yes some do and no issues but it could be costly if not correct.........."

The need for special tools had

The need for special tools had pretty much made my mind up(not woth buying unless I plan a rebuild).
If the UJs are shot I will buy new ones and change those. I have the tools and experience required (I've done quite a few being a long time Range Rover owner).
