If your sure it`s a Alpha then

If your sure it`s a Alpha then there are 5 nuts and a allen UNDER the trim tab.
NOT the allen FOR the trim tab

"You should get a manual befor

"You should get a manual before you launch into this. Also it's no more difficult to pull the drive from the boat, and that makes splitting the drive halves and reassembling them much easier. You will also then be able to grease and inspect your U joints, as well as your gimbal bearing.

You need Merc service manual #6. This covers Alpha drives from 1983 to 1990.

If you go down the list of topics you will see one titled " Ayuh, the back door is again open" originally started by Bondo.

If you go to this link you will be able to download the whole manual in .pdf format and then print off what you need. Hope you have high speed internet!

BTW, besides the 4 nuts that you see, there is also a bolt inside the trim tab cavity, and a nut on a stud right at the very front, just in the opening above the ventilation plate. These must be removed also to split the halves. Don't loose the small quad O ring that seals the oil passageways between the drive halves.

If you pull the drive, make sure to put the shifter in forward gear first. Then undo the six elastic stop nuts near the top of the drive, and it should pull out relatively easily. Be careful; it weighs about 80 lbs. The good news is you will only drop it on your toe once!
