Alpha One Reinstall Problem

The "book" says to put the LU back on with everything in Forward, but the stupid thing won't stay in Forward. Unlike every OB LU I've worked in, that spring into forward if bumped, this SOB springs into Neutral! I have a tool for rotating the shift shaft (no Vise Grips here) yet it moves only about 20 degrees regardless of the effort applied, and snaps out of Forward at a slight bump.

Tried that several times and the shifter snaps into Neutral every time--the tiniest bump and it's Neutral time

You have to rotate prop shaft counter clock wise while rotating the shift shaft clock wise (bronze part)

Once you have the shift shaft bronze part pointing 12:00 straight forward you then start to install u joint assembly/dive shaft into gimbal housing. Once this is started then you MUST keep constant counter clock wise pressure on prop shaft (as Chris said have prop installed).

Now reconfirm the shift shaft (bronze) is still pointing at 12:00 and if not nudge it to get there while maintaining cc wise pressure on the prop. Now while pushing the drive into gimbal housing spin prop CC wise continually and when you get to the coupler with the drive shaft while rotating prop cc wise and once you feel the splines engage you are done and simply push drive home. You should be able to get the drive housing within 1/2 inch of flush (sometimes due to new o-rings on drive shaft it takes a bit of effort past this point) and sometimes it will go to flush easily.


It is a bit of a tricky process if you dont do it all the time. After a few it becomes second nature.

Ayuh,... I use a rubber bungee strap,....
Hook one end to the cav-plate, wrap it 'round the prop, or prop shaft, 'n back up to the other side of the cav-plate,...
Rotate the prop shaft, as ya put pressure on the shift shaft til it locks into forward, then one more click of the clutch-dogs to tension the bungee strap,...
It'll take a 'ell of amount of twistin' the prop shaft to unlock forward gear with the tension supplied by the bungee strap,.....
 
Well, I sprained my already bad back trying to put that damn thing back on, so I had to take it to a marine repair place. They told me that a seal in the upper gear housing was damaged and needed replacement. I took a look, and it appears that the female driveshaft coming down from above had a seal (they removed the old one) that was damaged.

Has anyone a photo or drawing of this area? Likewise the upper portion of the shifter deal (where the LU [plugs in). Might be a problem there as well.
