I was out in the middle of th

I was out in the middle of the lake and hit a sand bar or something. The prop is bent and has a nice chunk missing and I have no reverse. What do ya think new lower unit? shifter cable broke?

" I wouldn't say new lower unit. At worst, just new prop, seal and reverse gear. If you still have full fwd and nuetral, the pinion gear should be in good shape.
The way it works is simple. If the engine is turning, so is the pivot gear and everything else in the outdrive except the prop shaft. Once you put it in gear, the prop shaft turns the prop, depending on which gear you put it. The cables push or pull the clutch "dog" forward or aft to engage the fwd or reverse gear into the pinion gear.
Here's the catch. They say you should always replace the gears as a set. Very expensive! And definately best. I talked to a guy on the water a couple of years ago however who only replaced his fwd gear. He had no problems as of yet and it was done the year prior. He was on the river almost every day.
