Alpha one impeller replacementshaft play

"I'm in the middle of replacing the water pump impeller on my Alpha one drive. Now that the pump is removed, I've noticed some side to side play in the drive shaft. If I pull up on the shaft (about 1/16th inch or so) it tightens up. Is this normal? If not, do I just need to tighten up the bearing retainer because it doesn't appear to be loose...

"Yes, Vertical play is normal

"Yes, Vertical play is normal in the driveshaft with the pump removed because the direction of the gear rotation will push the driveshaft up mating the upper bearing into its cup. Torque for the retainer is 100 ft lbs. Tightening the retainer over 100 will not take up the play if the bearing is shimmed correctly."
