Evening folks, Newbie here with my first boat and post. Purchased a 1990 Searay 200 Bowrider with 4.3 Mercruiser and 2nd Gen Aplha 1 ( I think). Boat is stuck in reverse currently, I have found the threads regarding checking and setting the shift cables properly, which I plan to start on tomorrow after work. Previous owner had it for a few years but was uncertain if they had ever been replaced. He did mention he tried to adjust it and could get fwd and neu but no rev, and the likewise he could get rev and neu but no drive. He had initially dropped the lower unit thinking the problem was there but it wasn't. Brought a longtime boat owner with me to check this boat out, he thought it might be the shift arm worn possibly. Really hoping he just has it out of adjustment and it can be put back to specs and work ok, are there any other common shift issues I should be aware of with these drives??

I'd say may be worth separating the upper and lower and make sure the shift shaft lines up correctly first....or at least give their 'coupling a thorough inspection.

then check the cable adjustments....

Separated the two, lower checked out ok. Pulled outdrive cover, checked shift cable travel and there was none basically. Lower cable bad I'm guessing?? Also, I seem to have excessive travel in my throttle arm, how far should they travel forward?
