Has anyone ever changed one of these do I really need to cut these access holes in the side of the outdrive or can I get to these bolts through the transom end Anyone ever change a gimbal ring on an Alpha One?

The proper way is to remove the transom assembly.
With severe rusing of the parts you may need to use a Ox/Ac torch to free the parts and that dosent work too well with the transom on the boat.
