Alpha I to Alpha I gen II swap

I am working on a 1982 24' Galsply and have removed the seized motor and the original Alpha I.....everything has been removed from both sides of the transom.
I have purchased a used 1998 350 with a Alpha I gen II complete and plan to install, I have not recieved the motor/ sterndrive yet so am not sure of what will need to be done to the transom to make the new sterndrive fit.

Will I need to alter the opening or is this a fairly straight swap "out with the old and in with the new" ????

Ayuh,.... The Gen.II has 2 more studs holdin' it to the transom,...

You'll need to drill the 2 top holes for it...

The keyhole should be close, to Ok as is, but might need a bit of trimmin' to clear everything....
 
Seal the wood in the holes w/epoxy to protect it. I use 2-3 coats of CPES...Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer then a final coating of L&L resin. Do that and the wood will never rot from moisture.

We had thought it would be a good idea to seal the wood, Its a thirty year old boat and fortunately the transom is sound. We have some west system epoxy, I suspect that would work OK? What is L&L resin?

L&L is Layup and Leveling resin. It is clear and honey like...good for just about any repairs. Easily fills small voids or mixes w/sawdust to make an epoxy putty. CPES is water like and penetrates into the wood cells to form a hard barrier. I used it to treat all the wood in a floor, stringer and transom replacement on a 19' Baretta. I basically waterproofs the wood.

Then the wood can't breath.

Mine is a 86' solid as a rock transom. I never sealed it.

Just my opinion yours is good after 30 years and you want to mess with it ?
