Alpha 1 will trim up but not down

Hi,
My alpha 1 leg will trim up but will not trim down. I have disconnected the four lines to the leg and hydraulic fluid flows from one on each side when the switch is activated and the two remaining lines allow the flow of hydraulic fluid when the other switch is activated. The motor runs when both switches are activated. I have topped up the hydraulic fuid and and bled the system.

IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE SWITCH OR THE PUMP, OR IS IT?

Any suggestions would be appriciated.:)

it would have been easier to determine the fault, before you disconnected the hydraulic lines.now youve got quite a job reconnecting and bleeding the oil.hope youve got a w/shop manual.you also need a pressure guage to T in to see what pressures the pump is putting out.You say youve bled the system?have you put it back together?what happens when you bypass the dash controls and supply 12v direct to the relays.?what was the original reason you pulled it apart?

If the motor is running when you are trimming up/out or in/down then answer this question. How old are your trim pistons? If the pistons are old, there is a good chance they are bound up in the gland nut. Hence they need to be replaced. The pumps pressure when trimming in/down is slight compared to trimming out/up.

I had a problem simular to yours one day. Went to launch the boat and nothing worked. Found the fuse in the supply power line and that was good. Opened a rubber boot where there was a electrical connection, opened the boot and looked inside and saw that one connection in the boot was corroded. Bypassed so i could fish that day but did a correct connecting later and fixed my problem. The fuse is in the power line near the pump..

Hi,
The reason that I disconnected the hoses to the leg was that the leg was trimming up but not down. The pump motor was running when I activated both in and out switches on the bulkhead. I then assumed (wrongly) that as there appeared to be power in the hydralic pump that it must be a hydralic oil (bleeding) issue.

I have checked the rams and neither are seized.

I have W/ S manual for the leg, pump and engine however this is not helping at the moment.

Is there still apossibility that this is an electrical problem?

If the pump is running in both directions with the switch at the helm, I would say the problem is not electrical. Put the system back together, clean all the wire connections fill it with fluid and test it. Make sure the electric motor is running when you activate the switch in both directions. And then get back to us with the results.
