"I currently run a '76 imp

"I currently run a '76 imperial w/120 hp mercruiser (pre-alpha system). I have been given an '86 thompson with only mounting plates and bell housing on the boat. no engine or od.
the fiberglass is much better on the '86, and I am hoping I can put my existing drive system into it. I see that everything is different, and I have a limited budget. is this pre-alpha retro fit worth my time? is it even a sane attempt?!
your thoughts would be appreciated"

"it'll fit. You will be taking any value out of the newer hull by puting an old eng./drive in it, but if You just want to run it, and have time to spend on it??"

"Ayuh,.....

It'll be a Cheap ride in a Nicer Boat,....
If you're willing to invest the Time........

You'll need All of the driveline out of the 76 to make it Work.......
Atleast the Holes in the transom are the Same......."

"I think I even have to change

"I think I even have to change the steering cable.
my biggest fear was at the transom. by eye-balling the 2 bell housings they look the same, but was not sure about the bolt patterns. the mech. I talked to wanted to tear it apart then tell me, if I had that kind of money, then i would not even be posting this question!!
thanks guys.
just so you all know, I put this drive system back together in the '76, so I am not going in totally blind!! I may be back with more questions though"

"The 76 transom assy is differ

"The 76 transom assy is different than the 86. The 76 has a wider space at the motor mount area. What hp. 70's and up to 1982 they are the same , then 83 to 85, then 86 on up. the outside will handle all alpha gen 1 and pre alphas. Also if 4 cyl. pre 83 use a shorter driveshaft than due newer ones."
