alpha 1 shift issues

1973;Kghost,
Thanks for the info. I'll have to try to adjust it or even check the cable length's according to Kghost. Hope you the best with your boat 1973.I'm hoping we just have a cable problem. I'm ready to hit the lake this weekend!!!

I went and took the cable off of the "pivot yesterday after doing the measurements only to find that if I pull the cable all the way out it will lock in reverse. Does this mean the cable is stretched? I appreciate all the help. Thanks

reread my instructions carefully..................

someone MUST hold the prop in forward (c'clockwise) locked so when you pull a small amount with two fingers lightly and feel resistance then stop and mark/measure.

If you do not do this you will simply shift into reverse..................

kghost, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I am still waiting for the lower unit to be delivered to my house. Have not had much of a chance to get back on computer because of work. Anyway, I will follow your directions to the tee! Really appreciate your help again. thanks again, Tom P.S. I will keep you posted on how well the installation goes if I ever get that far with the darn thing! lol

Had boat out three times since I put it back together, no Problems!Well, untill today! Backed in boat (just me, no help). Tied up boAt,parked truck, got in boat and noticed my bilge pump shooting full streamOut the side of the boat! I started cussing, then decided to chech the obvious! Yes, I forgot to put in the plug! First time E I have ever done that! If you ever want to test your bilge Pump, that's one way to do it!

That's why I hate certain public ramps especially around the summer holidays. It can get backed up and people tend to push you off the dock before you even get a chance to warm up engine and make sure things are ok. You should make up a checklist before you attempt to launch your boat. Distractions can be a serious problem especially when you have a line of boats behind you at the ramp. I did it once also! lol Now I plug both inner and outer transom just to be sure! I know it is overkill but it kind of makes me feel safer! lmao! Always carry several plugs and keep them handy within arms reach if you ever happen to do it again. You can shove a plug from inside transom until you get to shallow water and are able to put it in the proper way. I just got my replacement lower unit on Saturday so I will be posting sometime later in the week with some details. later, Tom

I've always had the plug in when I leave the house. Now, here in California and Oregon, because of certain little water species unknowingly being transported from one lake to another, for instance, the zebra mussel, you have to travel with your plug OUT, so when you get stopped at an inspection station, they positively want to see it OUT when you pull up or they can get pissy. I do have a list on the dash of the boat. It works most of the time. ;)

Good luck with your new lower.
