i'm sure this has been covered a hundred times but i don't know how to search the archives, i'm in the process of replaceing the bellows on a 1986 alpha one, how do you unhook the shift cable to get the gimble out far enough to work in there, i have taken the screw out of the end of the cable shift ear on the end of the cable but it won't go back through the hole....have watch all the online videos but none show the actual unhooking process.....thanks for listening

The cable does not come out that way,

what you need to do is remove the cable from the shift bracket and pull the entire gimbal housing away from the gimble ring with the entire cable attached. Not the best or easiest for the novice (no offense meant)

You also need to loosen or remove any clamp on the shift cable bellows end to alow the cable to be pulled outward without stretching the bellows.

This is a tough way to do the main bellows. The best method is to replace the shift cable and shift cable bellows and water hose at the same time.

This is a beast of a job.......................not for the faint at heart.............3-5 hours to replace all the bellows, hose and cable for the experienced person.

If the shift cable kinks you need to replace it.........................

Also when installing a new main bellows, install it on the gimbal housing first, the PUSH the bellows onto the tansom mount, Hose clamp location is very important so I hope you take note of where they are and make sure they are located in the same general location.

The bellows should be marked ( FWD) and (AFT)

The FWD end faces the front (bow) of boat, the two metal clips face 12:00 oclock, straight up.

Make sure to clean both surfaces as good as you can and apply a generous coating of BELLOWS ADHESIVE to the bellows and mounting surface before installing the bellows and tighting the clamps.

If you have issues with this send me a personal notification with you phone number and i will speak you thru what I can.

I have done hundreds of these..................

thanks, like to never get the water intake hose on, you are right it is a beast of a job,....but then again the local marine dealer wanted 700.00 to do it, guess i can stand a little pain for 700....LOL

Ayuh,.... When I'm goin' that deep, replacin' the bellows, I install a New shift cable at the same time....

If it ain't already on it's way out, it will be soon....

Have a look at You-Tube (just do a search there.) for some pretty decent step-by-step demos of replacing bellows on Merc outdrives. I'm a visual guy, and it's helpful to see images of what you're into, as well as see some experienced guys running into snags. I usually find that it's the unexpected stuff that snafu's my jobs, more than the actual job itself.
