"hi all-
i just had a new alpha 1 outdrive installed and it is making a noise at approx 800-100 rpm. the dealer says "don't worry about it, it works fine" but i don't agree. please take a listen to the youtube link and let me know if anyone has any ideas and/or if i'm being unreasonable in demanding it gets fixed.

iain with all the youtube viru

iain with all the youtube viruses going around right now you are probably better off just telling us what it sounds like. you might also just pull the top cap off and check out the top bearing.

"Ayuh,...

I agree with your Dealer,+ it's probably going to be under Warranty anyways......"

sounds like a u joint or gimba

sounds like a u joint or gimbal bearing. can't tell much from a video though. noises like that have to be heard in person.

try greasing the gimbal brg. see if it quiets it

"the noise was apparent day one after pick up. one of the questions i asked the dealer was does it need a break-in....he said no. then later after speaking with the mercruiser rep he said it does need a break in. i'm concerned about 1)the noise is at 'no wake' speed which i am at all the time 2) the noise is telling me something, i'm concerned about premature wear & tear.

also, i've put about 10hrs on the motor and no real change yet.

thanks guys

"I haven't heard the noise

"I haven't heard the noise, but have someone independent listen to it. Get another opinion. If its loud enough to bother you while underway.... take it back to the shop that did the work and tell them to make the noise go away."

"10 hours is the suggested breakin period for a new drive, so you are done with breakin. You should not have audible noise.
It may be wise to check the magnetic oil drain plug for metal debris and check a small oil sample from the drain for metal contaminants.
Make sure you are present when they do this, and demand to see the sample. You have every right to know what is going on.
The preload on the upper bearing set may be too tight, or the gear backlash may have been improperly set.
But whatever, it is your dealer and Merc's problem.
Worst case, I would insist they replace the entire drive leg, especially if they find any metal in the oil.

I've never seen an engine

I've never seen an engine or drive that made considerable noise that simply became quiet as it progressed through breakin.

"Iaian,
You did not state what drive manufacture the alpha 1 gen 1 came from. If this is a Mercruioser drive I would have some serious discussion with the merc tech who installed it. If this is an after market drive, I have heard from several people that they sound differently themn the OEM version."
