"Yep, Mercury says that you need a special seal puller to remove it. I suggest you find someone that has one, or can remove it for you. Quick and easy fix. Don't forget to change water pump/impeller also."

It may just be the lower impel

It may just be the lower impeller housing oil seal leaking oil into the impeller cavity which drains out the weep hole; easy fix.

"In my case which I mentioned above, mine was the Lower drive shaft housing oil seal, if i remember correctly. It was a lip seal. Had to borrow a seal puller, which looked like a modified slide hammer to remove it. Your case may be different."

"if you replace seals one at a time, you will have a busy summer. unfortunately it won't be spent on the water. have fun. S."

The correct way to find a seal

The correct way to find a seal leak is to drain the gear lube. Install one of the srews back in with its gasket. Get a hand air pump with a gauage on it and screw it into the other hole. (3/8-16 threaded hole) make sure it is sealed tight and pump air into the drive to 15 psi. It should hold that for 2 minutes with NO leak down.

No other way to do it but guessing!!

thanks for the info,
if you have a drive lube monitor bottle, should that hold 15 psi also or is it removed and plugged for the test.
also, is a vacuum test performed the same way?"
