"Hello guys, I recently acquired a 83 Wellcraft runabout with a mercury 4 cl. I believe it has an early alpha 1 stern drive ( 2 ½ X 2 ½ square top with a small square hole towards the rear) While checking the drive’s oil, I notice it was half full with water. I drained and refill the drive with Mercury gear oil. The problem is that since the oil change, I notice a lot of gear oil at the bottom of the engine compartment. I know is not engine oil, but I can not see where the oil is coming from. Do you have any suggestions?"

This is something you may not

This is something you may not be able to do yourself.

The outdrive needs to be removed from the boat and drained of all the liquid in it.
Then it needs to be pressure checked and all the leaking seals need to be replaced. If you are getting water in then there is more than just an upper carrier seal bad.

My advise is to remove it and bring it to a reputable shop for repair.
