I have the lower unit off, and checking the shift shaft. Should the sliding clutch 'snap' into place as you turn the shift shaft into gear? I've watched videos from others that when the turn the shift shaft, it seems to click into place. On mine, I turn it until it stops for forward gear, I don't hear a click, but the prop is engaged. Is this correct?

You have to turn the prop shaft at the same time. C'Clockwise for forward and Clockwise for reverse. The shift shaft moved the clutch dog forward and backward to engage foward gear and reverse gear.
there really isnt any "click", just the teeth of gear and dog engaging.... the teeth on each look similar to a saw tooth shape and the engagement surface is flat on the gear and dog.
so if you try to engage and turn prop shaft the wrong way it will click a lot as the teeth are now riding up on the sloped back side of the teeth.
