I'm a newbie here and to the boat world. I have a Merc A1 g2 that needs a bit of work. I had the Gimbal bearing and bellows replaced and the engine aligned by a mechanic. Now I'm planning to replace the U- joints and water pump impeller myself. My questions are about parts. For these U joints - do you prefer the lifetime lube type ( OEM ) or the greasable ? How about the impeller, is Sierra ok or is it a OEM only thing ? My mechanic used a Sierra gimbal bearing because it's greasable. please tell me what parts mfgr to steer clear of and which are good ( not just ok, I mean "good ") I want to save money on labor not parts. BTW this is a fresh water boat and on a trailer 99% of the time, Thanks for any help

Ha ha; they are nothing special because many are greasable when the lube hole is aligned properly. I prefer greasable U-joints...using the others tends to lead to no OD service until it breaks. I'm not a fan of Sierra soft parts...don't think they give the same service life as OEM...JMO.

How about repair manuals, I ordered a Clymer manual , anyone use them ? I'm guessing it's not as good as Mercs, but hopefully for the basic stuff I will be doing it should be good. Right ? I'm not tearing into gear boxes or anything, just looking to do normal maintenance myself. Winterization, U joints, trim sender, water pump, and future gimbal bearing, bellows, alignment, cable replacements etc.
