"i've been tearing down the outdrive for replaceing the gimbal ring..have picked up good solid transome mount/gimbal/bellhousing assembly amd have taken it apart ready to install to boat...found on the boat that the lip the u-joint bellows clamps to is rotted out around the bottom, right where the clamp sets...question is can that part be removed and transfered to the boat??just the ring part...i am told that you have to pull the engine to install whole assembly...looks like there is a gasket or sealer (red) between the 2 sections..i'm talking about the center as if you were looking at the gimbal bearing...or do i have to replace the whole outter transome mounting??...and thanks for a correct diagnostic on my outdrive play ..."

"that is part of the housing itself.from what you describe water has been sitting in theh boot for a long time and corroded it.yes, the engine has to come out, steering and exaust too.no sealer between the halves ,just a gasket."

this is not mine...but is rotted at same section...but behind where the sealer/gasket looking stuff is solid...can the outter part of this silver ring be transfered from one drive to the other...without removing section from boat??"

"If the section on yours that

"If the section on yours that is corroded is bad enough that the ring is gone down to the boss then yes the entire gimble plate must be replace there is no way to repair it with and certainty. This piece is molded to the gimble plate. Enine out, Exhaust "Y" pipe out. The steer ing actuator can be a work around in most cases and the inner plate if not badly corroded can be reused. This would be a very good time to check the transom of the boat for rot. I will use the required gasket with a thin coating of sealent. Also, if you let the tansom dry, a thin coat of 5200 around the transom hole will help keep the moistuure out and keep down the corrosion of the gimble plate."
