"I am in the process of ordering new parts for my engine rebuild in this thread http://www.marineengine.com/discus/messages/12478/220961.shtml.

My question is are aftermarket parts the same quality as OEM parts. Also are Sierra and Mallory equal in quality?

I am in the maintenance field and I know aftermarket can be just as good if not better that OEM on industrial type machines. BUT you have to know who you are buying from because you can also buy 1/2 price junk parts

"there are a lot of different brands out there,
you will get a lot of opinions about certain ones
personally ,when i did my rebuild i used oem parts.i did try mallory ign parts but they failed.since then i have only purchased oem
as far as pistons go wiseco are good but they
are blended with a carbon silicate wich causes them to react differently to heat.usually a longer warm up period.long story short do a lot of research and feel confidant with what you are
paying for . because if its junk you will pay the ultimat price for makeing a wrong decision."

Interesting about the piston....

. The block I am working on currently has +.02 pistons of an unknown origin. I am going to machine the "newer" block to match the 3 good pistons and buy a new +.02 to replace the bad one. So if I have one piston that is not an exact match to the others will that be an issue? Also do diffrent manufacturers have a tell tale "marking" I can look for to identify them?"

"do them all the same, all bear

"do them all the same, all bearings should be done
as well.there are markings on most pistons, stamped on top very lightly.
they may say std (standard) .20 .30 etc.."

I found what size they are &#4

I found what size they are (+0.02) but does the manufacturer matter? I don't know where to find that.

I will be replacing all the bearings. That is why I thought to post this topic. Rod and crank bearings are about half the price from Sierra. I want to be sure they are also good bearings and not cheap o's.

"maybe someone else will jump

"maybe someone else will jump in here and offer some more info . i never used any thing from
sierra,so i cant say.
what i meant in the last post, was to do all
pistons ,in all four the same.(all new)
if you are unsure about the size bring your block
to a good shop and have them mic it ."

"If it is any help I dont thin

"If it is any help I dont think I have seen any complaints on here about Sierra parts, nor on a much more heavily used forum that also use on regular basis."

"i rebuilt a 40hp johnrude wit

"i rebuilt a 40hp johnrude with wisco piston and after 10hrs of running the had some scratches on them but now that motor has over 1200 hrs of use its on a crab boat and no issues so idk i have used stuff for red rhino, serria and oem havent ad any issues but do what you think is best"

Thanks to all for your replies

Thanks to all for your replies. I feel better about possibly buying aftermarket parts. This is kind of a low budget rebuild that I don't want to cut corners on. I will buy all I need to do it right without breaking the bank.
I figured if anyone had an issue they would tell the "horror story"

"i use sierra pistons as well

"i use sierra pistons as well as oem and wiseco..if there r issues w/factory,i will use wiseco in v4 v6's and sierra in others."
