"In the pursuit of smoother ru

"In the pursuit of smoother running and a bit more performance I am looking at some Boyeson reeds for my 1986 E120. It looks like I have to to pull the intake manifold off anyway to replace the recirc valves, so at the same time thought I should upgrade the reeds. I would appreciate your thoughts on whether this is a worthwhile upgrade.
Thanks

I have built many racing outboard engines over the years and found you wont notice any appriecable improvement over the factory ones unless you do a lot of rework to the engine

"Completely agree with Jamie o

"Completely agree with Jamie on that one. Would take it one step further - there is pretty much nothing you can do to a stock engine that will improve the performance to a point where you would actually be able to see the results in actual "on boat performance".

Of course that is assuming you keep it tuned, run the correct prop and your rigging is done correctly.

A new set of spark plugs once a season and running fresh gas every time out will do more to improve the performance of any motor than all the other "hyped" products out there...."

"I agree and disagree with Jam

"I agree and disagree with Jamie & Graham. While you won't see any real performance gains w/ aftermarket reeds there are a couple of pluses.
I've always, when changing reeds, used Boyesen reeds. Whether in motorcycles, PWCs, and outboards. What you will get is a bit smoother idle(as long as all other components are in order), quicker throttle response, possibly a slight gph gain and the comfort knowing that if one should crack and break off your not gonna wipe your cyl.
You're not gonna get big h.p. gains or see a jump in top speed. The choice is with the owner."

"Thanks all. I was not expecti

"Thanks all. I was not expecting gains in HP or MPH with the reeds. What I was mostly after was the smoother idle and throttle response. If this is all I get out of the insttall, I'll be a happy camper."

New sparkplugs and a new therm

New sparkplugs and a new thermostat(s) will do significantly more to smooth out an idle.

A strong/clean spark in a motor that is "at" operating temp will idle very nicely - assuming the fuel system is in good shape and the gas is fresh.

"The boat is new to me, but so

"The boat is new to me, but so far: Compression check (130 or very close to 130 in all cylinders);new Champion plugs properly gapped; two new thermostats and gaskets; fuel tank drained and refilled. Idles not too bad on the muffs. In the water with the back pressure it runs rough and stalls out at idle. Once I can get it into gear (without a stall out) and the RPM up, it gets on plane easy and runs fantastic at speed. Idle it back down and it will start to run rough again and stall out. Next step. Replace the reeds and recirculating valves and take it to a shop to check linkage and timing."
