hi new to forum looking for someone with knowledge. just bought a boat with a mariner 50 hp elpt 4s. been having issues ordering right parts it now seems this unit can have 3 different gear boxes with mine being a light weight unit. is there advantages or disadvantages with having this light weight unit? on first outing in boat the motor started first turn of the key but couldn't get boat up on the plane a 50 hp is the max my shetland 498 is rated for. the engine surged now and again and had to just cruise back at slow speed as was putting boat up in the air but just seemed short of getting up on the plane. i have since serviced the unit my self new plugs new fuel filter.oil filter oil gearbox oil flushed and changed. compression test not to bad but only doing on cold as unit stopped running traced it back to fuel line and primer bulb then male connection was broke so have renewed all and done the impeller too engine starting right away again but no water pumping up but stripped bottom leg to find pump housing tube was stuck to top end so have re fixed but no water still when on muffs SHOULD there be water right away? or does engine need to heat up before thermostat will open to let water flow to pee hole? have decided to take to loch in case muffs not supplying enough water and will give me a chance to tune engine as i messed about with fast idel and enrichment screw before finding fuel system was falling apart. can my unit take the other gear boxes or is the one have good enough THANKS TO ANYONE who can shed some light on all of this for me
best regards jim:rolleyes:

Thermostat needs to open, usually a couple of minutes 'til the engine reaches operating temperature. Not making onto plane and surging suggests a spun prop

Can you post your serial number?
hi thanks for the reply engine serial is 0g999137. I think the surging was down to the fuel line being in a bad way and once I replaced fuel line and primer bulb and fuel connector it was spilling fuel out at the connector in the outboard so i replaced that male connector the old one had a slight bend on the securing pin and the female connection was split at the connection end as when removed you were looking at the spring inside. i have also bought a new tank but not used yet as the outboard fired straight back up once all the connectors and hose had been replaced. the prop was not in the best condition although usable but i have bought another with a slightly smaller diameter so prop should get more turns per revolution its a 13 pitch prop so should be correct for set up and boat weight. its 1 of the 2 serial numbers mentioned for prop for this outboard but as you know i will only find out once outboard is under load which i hope to be doing Thursday or Friday down the loch weather permitting.if it still does it after that it might need to go to a mechanic as ive changed just about everything. thanks the Thermostat query puts my mind to rest a bit
