Advice - should water be coming out here???!

Hello everyone

Just had my Johnson 90HP 2 Stroke 2002 (model J90VLSNF) serviced. This motor is new to me. I got a water pump kit including impeller and this has been replaced by a freelance engineer.

This is what happens when I run it:

a) The tell tale is not as strong as it used to be. It's not blocked. Water comes out, but it used to shoot out.
b) Water is coming out here in the photo:

Towards the front, the water coming out that gap is cold, towards the back it is warm.

Could anyone please advise? Do I need to go back and get this checked?

Thanks!

JP

Not to worry, what you are seeing is water that has already gone through the engine and done it's job and is heading back to the sea anyway. Your guy just didn't seal the seam (most don't because it doesn't matter except to worry you) But that has nothing to do with your weak tell-tale stream----if that is a problem. Can't tell from here.

The water leaking at the metal to metal surface where the lower unit bolts up to the long exhaust housing is normal. It will soon clog with marine debris... OR... you can drop the lower unit 1/4" and squirt in some sealer as listed here if it bothers you.

OMC Adhesive is now Bombardier 3M Product #847 and may be listed as Scotchgrip 847, part number 776964

Double check the water telltale outlet, hose, and connection at the engine. If it isn't clogged at some point, suspect a faulty water pump installation.

the leg needs to come back off and the small water tube lined up correctly between the water pump and the pipe going to the powerhead.

if the tell tale had been as strong as ever then it would be ok as a small a mount does come out the leg, but it was never meant to from the factory. !!!!
tell tale should l be strong, anyone telling you its nit meant to be strong is wrong...

the warm water coming out is fine, the cold is not as that should be going to exhaust adaptor then drop down the excess .

I have fitted plenty of these and always get the odd it, but not that much... check the pipe out.

Thanks fdrgator, joereeves, phillnjack. So the key question is over the tell tale - if I had not seen this before, I'd have thought it fine as it is. But I feel it was stronger before. I just shot this video now, what do you think? This is at idle and it does get stronger with revs, obviously.

that is not too weak, but I would drop the leg if it used to be stronger myself.
its an easy job to do.

Thanks - ok to use the boat for a short distance (5 to 10 miles) before dropping the leg and checking? If I can't, I'll miss a day fishing with my boys... :(

You can't test a water pump by running on muffs. All that proves is that water is able to flow through it. The pump isn't pumping, it is only allowing hose water to pass. Put the boat in the water and see if you even have a problem, before "fixing" it.

personally I would drop the leg, its a 30 minute job to take off and put back on. (once you do one its a very simple job).

seen so many peoples motors where the little short connecting pipe is kinked and not on correctly or split

and I agree gap between mid and gearcase does look a bit suspect !!!

No, I mean he may have buggered up the aluminum surfaces. Even so, as I said before, water coming out there is not a problem. And as others have suggested, if he messed up something else when assembling it, that is another story.

At first glance, the water escaping the two metal surfaces looked like the same ole, same ole question pertaining to a metal to metal surface leakage... BUT... the above remarks about that gap had me take a closer look. Yeah, I agree, that gap does look suspect and uneven. Too bad it's not local... I'd like to see that up close.

I agree water comes out that seam all the time it's not a big deal. But yours has a LOT of water coming out of it. A normal seam would have water trickling out but you have a full flow of water. Needs to be investigated when you take it apart take pictures and get back to us. We would like to know what the problem is.
